The sun is setting, meaning New Years' Celebrations are about to start, meaning business for the cape crowd. "You know Jesse, the longer I'm here, the more I think you steered us in the right direction."
"In general." They both can fly so they move from building to building expertly and without much risk. "It's a beautiful place with so much history and potential, but -" There's the predictable gunfire as the approach Kensington. It may or may not be celebratory.
"3x2(9yz)4a." Jesse started bouncing from building to building, running along the tops to build up speed, although she didn't get to far ahead.
"You'd think we'd have got the message through not to shoot guns off into the air. The bullets will come down somewhere, and it make us fliers unhappy."
Jesse looked down at a clump of people on the corner, before continuing. "Please let that be celebratory. The night is going to be long enough as is."
The first block of it is. The second block feature a party that has gotten out of hand. Wounded and panicked people fall out of a whole-block sized warehouse that was hastily and badly converted nightclub. Damn city bribes The place only has one door and it sounds like a war zone inside.
"Troia to available Titans. Nightclub gang fight. Unknown number civilians and combatants inside. Requesting some back up."
Meanwhile, Donna is going to create a door. Trampling is a major cause of death in these circumstance. a side wall is punched out and she is immediately under gunfire coming from within the smoky club.
Jesse keeps dealing with the party goers. anyone slow and especially anyone who trips disappears in a red blur to a park two blocks down.
She does stop to say a few words to Donna. "I can pull the smoke out so you can see clearly, but they'll be able to see you, and each other. Want me to?"
Jesse grabs one girl who's shoes were impractical even before the heal broke, and set her down on the street corner, then started running circles outside the 'side door." She ran faster and faster, funneling the smoky air out of the club. The other door would allow clear air to be sucked in.
As she circled, she thought I hope the visability means that the guys with guns won't hit as man civilians accidentally. But, these guys are shooting in a night club. They don't care that much. I just hope they don't start aiming for me. I'd hate for someone to get hit because they're in my arms.
Once most of the smoke had cleared Jesse shouted toward Donna. "You're keeping their attention. We'll get backup. I can only get so far in. It's like pinball at any speed."
People are beginning to see who they're shooting at all right.
"Yo! Five-O."
"Worse! Lady capes!"
"Aw fuck this!" Many of them stop shoot and start to scatter. Sadly, that leaves the bolder ones, the ones who have delusions of becoming a legend in the Philadelphia underworld.
Jesse hesitated for a moment, but didn't chase the fleeing men. There were still innocent people in there with the other shooters. Plus, she didn't want to leave Donna alone. Two versus the world is very different then one versus the world.
Jesse kept her focus on the only intentional door, clearing the hall down to the dance floor of people. She was almost the the point where she would have a free run at the shooters. She just had to clear the last few people who had frozen in shock.
Donna's shout made a really nice distraction. Combined with the dark lighting in the club, Jesse hoped that these guys wouldn't even see her blur. It was always easier to pull guns away from people when they didn't expect it. Of coarse, once people started yelling about their gun being gone, it wouldn't be much of a surprise, but she's Jesse Quick. It didn't take long, and after the first one she remembered that gun barrels were hot.
"Ouch! Stupid. I'm okay."
Anyone still shooting got their gun taken. If they pulled out another one, she's take that, too. She put them in a pile outside the hole in the wall, where Donna could keep an eye on them.
Then she went to guard her door and keep the rats in until the police showed up.
"Didn't -" She stops. Wally knows the speed heal trick and it's a wonder why he didn't teach Jesse, but she;s still not wholly sure that''s terrain she can ask about. "Nevermind."
"The usual. Bruised from a night's work and looking forward to going home. School break and all." Meaning she actually has Roy and Lian home and not up to their eyeballs in homework. Miracle of miracles.
Jesse raised an eyebrow at the 'don't' but shrugged and let it go when Donna said nevermind. If Donna wanted to say or ask something, she had the right, as a teammate and friend.
"Are we done? Did I miss the metaphorical ball falling? Or does going out with you mean I get to actually sleep tonight?"
"Oh, midnight was somewhere in between you punching out Thing One and me putting Thing Two in the rafters. We're still on until 3AM, but we can't leave here until the police get a statement or we get a specific call." She sighs. " New rules took effect 4 minutes ago.
She looks again at the hands and choses to risk it. "I thought you speedsters learned to speed heal through speeding up your metabolism."
Jesse looked at her hands. "Heal, yes. I can do it if I think about it hard enough. The problem is that there's still extra heat in them. That's not a thing my powers fix. I can't even run really fast to get the cold. The speed force protects me."
Jesse looked at her hands some more. "Once they're burned, I can heal them, yes. The ice just prevents further damage."
Jesse paused, and looked up. "Happy New Year. Any resolutions you want to share? Any goals I can remind you of in June?"
"Huh. I'll have to remember that." She leans back and looks to the stars. "Meet my son or daughter. Keep enough clients to keep us all fed and watered. You?"
"Keep my father's company going. Get it going stronger, even. Um... Not getting further then three weeks behind on the books, even if the world is ending, or there's an invasion, or whatever."
Jesse followed Donna's gaze up to the stars. "I always wonder how much of the space dust and shuttle parts we leave up there is visible. I know you can see the satellite."
"I remember Rip. At one point he told a hilarious joke. That's about all. I can't even remember the joke. It's all a huge muddle of fog in my brain."
Jesse shifted from looking at the stars to looking at the warehouse. "I don't like not remembering things, but if I have to have a memory gap, which is kind of a occupational hazard, I like the hypertime fog."
Jesse put her hand up where the fly was buzzing. "Can you land, or do I need to pluck you from the air with chopsticks?" Jesse blinked. "Okay, I've been watching too many movies at the tower."
She paused, and then looked more serious. "Are you hurt? Who were you patrolling with?"
He returns back to his normal human form. "Hurt? No, no, no... I just heard that two lovely ladies had some trouble with some gunmen, and I came to see if anyone had any booboos that needed kissing." He winks. "Or to make sure you guys had everything in hand."
Jesse gave him a look. "I believe Donna has already filled her position of dedicated boo-boo kisser."
She looked back at the hole in the wall in the warehouse. "The shooting has stopped. The police have come to pick up folks. We're down to helping with paperwork, whenever asked to assist, which may require comic relief to get through with our sanity."
Jesse looked him up and down. "Happy New Year. Anything fun happen to you? Any amusing resolutions?"
"I have resolved not to attempt to take over the world," he replies. "And I've resolved to stop flossing with razor wire. Now, as for comic relief, say the word. I'll get Dick to dress up in his shortpants again."
Jesse attempted to keep a straight face. There may have been some small giggles. "If you ever think of doing that, let me know ahead of time, so I can sell tickets. Dick in shortpants would sell them, thanks to a thousand girlhood crushes." Jesse blushed. "But you trying to get him into them would also be a fabulous fight to watch."
"I notice you've left yourself a loophole there. Taking over the world by accident is fine, so long as you weren't attempting to do so?"
"Oh, sure. Accidental world-conquering is all fine and good. But I'll leave Babs the role of getting Dick into... and out of... the scaly green speedo. I'm sure it could be arranged with her help."
"Babs can do anything. That's a well known fact. However, the amount of bribery she would have to use to get him into shortpants would mean we'd owe her for the rest of our lives... even more then we already do. It's just not worth it for a night of paperwork..."
"However... I can totally see trying to get him to wear them for the next big charity bash we get invited to. People will pay more, and bid more in the auction if he's showing off the items in his short shorts..." Jesse smiles an evil grin.
"I'll have to remember that. I'll bring it up sometime when he's feeling generous."
